The “Plugged In” program is a donation based
program, we take in donations of used computers, and refurbish them. The
computers are then donated to families with school age children that are in need
in this economical downfall. We provide this service to help the children by
giving them access to more resources for research in their school work. In the
time of a technological world, many school children have below average grades
because they have no access to our growing internet world. This program is one
way of trying to level the playing field for the children who are in economical
distress.
Donation information
We accept donations of most any type of computer parts. We do ask that any
computer donated be of Pentium III class or above (800 MHz speed and above).
Anything of lower speed is obsolete and expensive to find parts for (if parts
are needed). And hard drives donated should be at least large enough to handle a
decent operating system (I.e. Windows 2000 or Windows XP). Where those are the
operating systems that Microsoft still offers support and updates for. We also
accept install CD’s for Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
What Happens with donated hard drives
We will never boot from a hard drive before it has been wiped of data. Hard
drives we are going to keep are overwritten seven times in the process of
testing. If we are not going to reuse a hard drive, it is physically destroyed
in our facility before we send it to a responsible e-waste recycler. We use
Darik’s Boot and Nuke (information can be found at http://www.dban.org/ )
